Here's another moped I'd never seen before- a 1976 Benelli Magnum 50cc, from 1976. (Borrowed from minidoodle.com). Benelli made a lot of mopeds and motorcycles that never made it into this country. Actually, I don't think most of the really interesting European mopeds ever made it into this country. There was a brief period in the late 70s when the price of gas had people scrambling for high-mileage vehicles (rather like now) but when prices stabilized and the economy picked up again in the mid-80s, people put the mopeds in the garage and importing all but shut down.
Right now we're seeing a lot of mopeds on the market again, but this time, instead of really neat Italian bikes, we're seeing a lot of scooter-styled mopeds from mysterious Chinese factories, and little or no after-sale support for many of them. Caveat emptor.
